Adecco, together with the New Zealand Olympic Committee, is today delighted to launch an exciting initiative that will support New Zealand athletes through their athletic careers and beyond.
The Athlete Career Programme is an international programme, spearheaded by the IOC, that addresses one of athletes’ primary concerns – preparing for life after competition. The programme covers three critical areas including education, life skills and work-place placements through Adecco’s extensive employer network.
Barbara Kendall, New Zealand’s most accomplished female Olympian has been appointed to promote the Athletes Career Programme in Oceania. Barbara said "The Athlete Career Programme provides important support during the transition period, partnering with organsiations to allow athletes to contribute to New Zealand, well beyond thier sport."
Overseas, the programme is already a huge success with more than 5,000 athletes throughout 40 countries receiving employment support and placements through this initiative.
Today’s announcement ensures New Zealand athletes will now have the opportunity to receive the same benefits.
NZOC President Mike Stanley, President of NZOC and Patrick Glennon, Adecco Vice President & Adecco Global Director of the International Olympic Committee Athlete Career Programme formalised the announcement at a ceremony in Auckland.
Athletes present at today’s announcement believe the new programme will have a tangible benefit in athletes’ lives and are looking forward to the initiative being brought to life.
The first athletes to receive placement support are expected to enter the programme following the Commonwealth Games in October 2010, whilst many more will receive career planning support through 2011 in preparation for careers post London 2012.
"Adecco is delighted to partner with the NZOC, supporting athletes to make the difficult transition from sport to the world of work. It's a unique opportunity for us to use our expertise to assist those who have dedicated so much to New Zealand".
Mike Davis, Managing Director, Adecco Group NZ.
Shortly after the programme was launched, Richard Lockhart a fromer Olympian and now Charteed Accountant wrote "It is a massive life change for an athlete who has competed at the highest level. I was fortunate enough to compete at the 1986 Commonwealths, 1988 Olympics and 1990 Commonwealths and put off/delayed getting a job as long as possible. Having the support of employers is a significant boost as well. Well Done to Adecco".
