Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori has a strong and supportive team of committed advocates for the revitalisation of te reo Māori. We support each other in our work and in improving our own use of te reo Māori. It's a small workplace with a family-friendly whānau culture. Our work will support the Government's Māori language strategy, Maihi Karauna, to be issued under the new Māori Language Act 2016.

As an experienced translator you will work in this integral role to promote and contribute to the excellence and quality assurance in te reo Māori language services in both oral and written translations from English.

In this role you will provide te reo Māori language translations for Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori internal documents - including press releases, corporate documents, annual plans and official statements - and provide input into the plans for communications initiatives, events and promotions, language plans, and digital media. You will contribute to the implementation of ongoing lexical and lexicography development whilst including iwi and community te reo Māori and dialectical considerations. Additionally you will assist in the delivery of both the annual Toi Reo Māori Translator and Interpreters examinations and the National Māori Language Proficiency Examinations (Whakamātauria Tō Reo Māori).

The successful applicant will be working closely with an open and warm team as well as responding to enquiries from customers and public and private sector agencies.

To be considered for this role you will have:

  • A current translators licence;
  • Either a Master's Degree or equivalent, or four to ten years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of both education and experience;
  • Experience in undertaking complex translation work in te reo Māori, including interpretations and quality assurance processes;
  • Expert knowledge of te reo Māori and relevant linguistic and lexicography frameworks;
  • Experience in undertaking the analysis and interpretation of legal documents;
  • High level te reo Māori language skills and the ability to transfer knowledge of the language to a range of domains as appropriate;
  • The ability to apply object analytical skills around Māori language quality assurance in a range of domains, and to accordingly provide sound advice to lead relevant strategic developments of, and on behalf of, the organisation
  • A sound working knowledge of key issues impacting on te reo Māori language development and regeneration;
  • A strong understanding of the machinery of government and government processes; and
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in both English and te reo Māori.

You will also have the ability to work effectively with and assist other teams within the organisation, key stakeholder networks, and other Government agencies in the area of te reo Māori language quality assurance.
